The Crowborough Breastfeeding Café

Feeding

The Friends of Crowborough Hospital and the Birth Centre Staff have teamed up to provide a new breastfeeding café every Thursday morning in the Day Centre.     The Friends are funding the use of the day centre and providing the equipment and refreshments, with the staffing managed by the Birth Centre.  Since re-opening in April 2022, the Crowborough birth centre has supported around 165 women to give birth, as well as providing maternity care (antenatal and postnatal) for around 700 women and babies. The Birth Centre staff pride themselves on providing compassionate, woman-centred, care, which is reflected in the positive feedback the midwives receive each month.  Over the past year, they have identified a need to provide an infant feeding support group as part of their service: a community based resource for new mums to meet, socialise and receive emotional support as well as expert feeding advice.

Laura Scarlett (Birth Centre Maternity Support Worker) who is championing the café explains that “infant feeding is not just about nutrition. It’s also about building a relationship between mother and baby, which goes far beyond the early months, and so good, consistent, compassionate support is critical”.
